The definition of journey refers to ‘something suggesting travel or passage from one place to another’. Take a Lettering Journey (Martinez, 2019) is an invitation to accompany Heather Martinez on her cross-country journey of the U.S. to discover sources of lettering inspiration. It is also an invitation to her readers to grab some markers and grow their lettering skills. The book introduces readers to eight new lettering styles in 121 pages inspired by the places that Heather and her husband, Raymond Martinez, visited. Since Niagara Falls is practically in my back yard, my favorite new style is ‘Niagara’. With Heather’s bold imagination and bold strokes, she replicated a picture of Niagara Falls inside her letters. She promised a wow factor and she delivered. The book also serves as an instructive guide to the art of lettering. Each lettering style is deconstructed into its basic strokes. The book contains plenty of practical tips including what Neuland markers to use and best use cases for each lettering style. As an added bonus, the book contains examples of the different lettering styles from guest collaborators. As somebody who is new to this field, I thought the book was very informative and well worth the investment. I also appreciated the backstory. Thank you Heather for sharing your journey with us!
